# The MuleSoft alternative for work that runs _inside_ Salesforce.

Case routing, lead assignment and SLA enforcement, on the Salesforce investment you already own.

MuleSoft connects the enterprise to Salesforce and governs agents across the estate. It is strong at both. Routing a case, assigning a lead, enforcing an SLA: that work runs inside the org, and it doesn't need an external runtime.

The short answer

## Do you _need_ MuleSoft for Salesforce workflows?

For connecting external systems and governing agents across a multi-vendor estate, MuleSoft is a strong choice: the deepest connector library on the market, and a real control plane in Agent Fabric.

For workflows that run inside Salesforce, often not. [Case routing](/why-ortoo-orchestrator/vs-routing-tools), lead assignment, SLA enforcement, approvals and exception handling run on the record, inside the org. [Ortoo Orchestrator handles them natively](/why-ortoo-orchestrator): 100% Salesforce-native, configured by the admins you already have, priced per work item completed. Many organisations run both today, and the split is worth mapping rather than assuming.

The gap that matters

## Connectivity is not _execution_.

Getting data into Salesforce is well served now. Open APIs, big connector libraries, MCP. The harder problem starts after it arrives.

Teams feel it as a handoff that goes quiet. Native assignment handles the simple version well. The gap shows up in three places.

Middleware wasn't built for that layer, and MuleSoft says so. Its own architecture guidance describes Agent Fabric as coordinating agents and tools across platforms, deployed to its own runtime. Ortoo Orchestrator runs where the work already sits.

### A case lands, then waits

It exists in Salesforce. Who owns it, how urgent it is and when the SLA clock started are all still unanswered.

### Every team solved it differently

Sales built one set of assignment rules. Service built another. Neither can change theirs without a deploy.

### Nobody can say what should have happened

A case breaches, or a lead goes to the wrong owner, and you piece it together from field history and whoever remembers.

Side by side

## What each one does, and where they _differ_.

MuleSoft connects enterprise systems to Salesforce, manages APIs across them, and governs AI agents across a multi-vendor estate. Ortoo Orchestrator runs how the work executes once it is inside Salesforce, across routing, approvals, AI steps, deterministic steps and the systems you already run on. Two layers, and for Salesforce-internal work the native layer is the one that does the job.

Most operational problems show up after the data arrives. That is the layer Ortoo runs, and the people who own the work change how it runs the same day, without a release cycle.

The honest version

## What MuleSoft is genuinely _good_ at.

Four situations where MuleSoft is the better answer, and we'd say so on a call:

### Connecting the enterprise.

SAP, Oracle, mainframes, custom systems, dozens of them, at scale. The connector library and the API-led model exist because that problem is genuinely hard. Ortoo is not a replacement for that layer.

### API lifecycle management.

Designing, publishing, versioning, securing and retiring APIs across an enterprise portfolio, with the governance that goes around it. Ortoo doesn't do this, and isn't trying to.

### Governing agents across a multi-vendor estate.

Agent Fabric discovers agents wherever they were built, routes between them, gives them verifiable identity, and can stop one that misbehaves. If your problem is that nobody knows how many agents the company is running, that is the product for it. MuleSoft is also a Leader in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for iPaaS, published March 2026.

### Controlling model spend across the estate.

MuleSoft has shipped real cost controls: per-request cost tracking, prepaid caps per team, and budget enforcement. If your exposure is token spend across many agents from many vendors, that is worth having, and it is not something Ortoo does at estate level.

Pricing

## Run it on the investment you already _own_.

An integration layer outside Salesforce is a second system to own. The other difference is what you are charged for: processing, or work completed.

### Ortoo Orchestrator

- Runs inside your Salesforce org.
- No external runtime.
- Configured by your team.
- Charged per work item completed.
- Deterministic steps don't require model inference.
- Your own model key, so AI spend stays yours.

### MuleSoft

- An external runtime to operate.
- Its own subscription.
- Heavier implementation project.
- Specialist engineers to build and maintain it.
- Pricing is not published and is quoted per account.

Integration

## Not every integration needs middleware.

A lot of integration work is Salesforce-connected: pull data from a service, enrich a record, post to another system, wait for an approval. Ortoo Orchestrator runs those inside the org, often without a separate middleware licence.

Each step is callable: an API call, a Flow, an Apex action, an AI agent, a human approval. They run four ways.

Deterministic

Rule-based execution, where certainty matters.

AI-assisted

Interpretation and adaptive handling, where judgment helps.

Hybrid

AI for the judgment, deterministic logic for the compliance-critical steps.

MCP-based

Consume external MCP services, and publish Ortoo steps other systems can call.

Facing a renewal? Map which of your use cases actually need middleware. The rest can run natively.

Not either/or

## Keep MuleSoft where it _earns_ its place.

This isn't a rip-and-replace argument. If you connect SAP, Oracle, a mainframe or dozens of external systems, MuleSoft's connectivity is hard to beat, and Ortoo isn't trying to beat it. The two work as layers. MuleSoft connects the enterprise to Salesforce and governs the agent estate. Ortoo runs what happens to the work once it is inside Salesforce.

Where Agent Fabric is already in place, Ortoo registers into it as a governed node, so the control plane keeps its enterprise-wide view while Ortoo handles execution inside the org.

The question worth asking is whether the execution layer inside your org is covered, because that is where operational work actually gets done.

From one workflow to many

## Start with _one_ workflow. Grow into orchestration at scale.

For most teams the connectivity question is largely handled. Data gets into Salesforce. The next stage is harder: that data has to be acted on reliably across routing, approvals, AI steps and exceptions, and execution gets unpredictable as those pieces interact.

That is the gap Ortoo Orchestrator fills. The first workflow goes live in weeks. Adjacent workflows follow. Over time orchestration spans service, revenue and cross-system processes, inside the same Salesforce org, with no external runtime added.

Frequently asked questions

## MuleSoft and Salesforce workflows, _quick_ answers.

Is there a MuleSoft alternative for Salesforce?

For workflows that run inside Salesforce, yes. Ortoo Orchestrator runs routing, assignment, SLA enforcement and case execution natively in the org, configured by your Salesforce admins and priced per work item completed. For connecting external enterprise systems to Salesforce, and for governing agents across a multi-vendor estate, MuleSoft remains a strong choice, and many teams run both today.

Do I need MuleSoft for Salesforce workflows?

Not for the work that runs inside Salesforce. Routing, assignment, approvals and SLA execution don't need an external runtime. You need MuleSoft when the problem is connecting many systems outside Salesforce, managing APIs at enterprise scale, or governing AI agents across several vendors at once.

What is MuleSoft Agent Fabric, and does Ortoo Orchestrator compete with it?

Agent Fabric is MuleSoft's control plane for AI agents. It discovers agents wherever they were built, routes between them, gives them verifiable identity, observes what they do, and can stop one that misbehaves. Ortoo Orchestrator works one layer in from there: it runs how the work itself executes inside Salesforce, across routing, sequencing, SLA enforcement, approvals and exceptions. The two extend each other. Where you already run Agent Fabric, Ortoo registers into it as a governed node, so the control plane keeps its enterprise-wide view while Ortoo handles execution inside the org.

Who are MuleSoft's main competitors and alternatives?

It depends which part of MuleSoft you are replacing. For cross-enterprise connectivity and API management, the like-for-like alternatives are Boomi, Workato, SnapLogic, Jitterbit and the cloud-native services from Microsoft Azure and AWS. Informatica is no longer one of them: Salesforce completed its acquisition in November 2025, so it now sits alongside MuleSoft rather than against it. For the operational work that runs inside Salesforce once the data has arrived, routing, assignment, SLA enforcement, approvals and exception handling, the alternative is Ortoo Orchestrator, which runs natively in the org with no external runtime. Which list matters depends on where the work you are trying to fix actually runs.

Is MuleSoft owned by Salesforce?

Yes. Salesforce acquired MuleSoft in 2018, and it is positioned as the integration and agent-governance foundation for the Salesforce platform. Commercial ownership is not the same as architectural integration: MuleSoft runs on its own runtime outside the Salesforce org, so work it coordinates leaves the org and returns. Ortoo Orchestrator runs inside the org.

What's the difference between Ortoo Orchestrator and MuleSoft?

MuleSoft is a connectivity, API-management and agent-governance layer that runs outside the Salesforce org. Ortoo Orchestrator is a Salesforce-native workflow orchestration system that runs inside it. MuleSoft connects systems and governs agents across the enterprise. Ortoo makes the work execute predictably inside Salesforce, step by step, with a full audit trail on the record.

Can Ortoo Orchestrator handle integrations on its own?

Yes, for Salesforce-connected integrations. Every integration is a callable step: a REST or GraphQL API call, an existing Flow, an Apex action, an AI agent, an MCP tool, or a human approval. Steps run deterministically, with AI assistance, in hybrid mode, or over MCP. For heavy connectivity across many non-Salesforce systems, a dedicated integration system like MuleSoft is still the right tool.

We're facing a MuleSoft renewal. Where does Ortoo fit?

Map which of your current use cases are Salesforce-connected workflows and which are genuine cross-enterprise connectivity. The first group can often be handled natively in Ortoo Orchestrator, on the Salesforce investment you already own and charged per work item completed. The second group stays where it is strongest. A workflow-mapping session produces that split.

Do I need MuleSoft for Agentforce?

Only if your agents need to reach systems outside Salesforce, or you are governing agents from several vendors at once. Agentforce creates the agents. The operational work around them still has to execute: routing it, sequencing it, enforcing the SLA, handling the exception. Ortoo Orchestrator provides that execution layer inside the Salesforce org, and it can publish and consume MCP tools alongside Agentforce.

How does the pricing compare?

MuleSoft doesn't publish pricing and is quoted per account, so a like-for-like number isn't available from either side. The models differ in what they charge against. Consumption pricing charges for how much processing happens. Ortoo Orchestrator charges per work item completed, so cost tracks finished work. There is also no external runtime to license or operate. For specifics, talk to our team.

Which model does the AI use, and who pays for it?

You choose, per step, and you bring your own API key. The model relationship and the spend stay with you, rather than being brokered and metered by the vendor. Workflows can also run fully deterministic, with no model calls at all.

## Map what happens _after_ the record lands.

A workflow-mapping session covers what your systems already connect, what happens once that data is in Salesforce, and where a native execution layer would make the work predictable.
